Album

Let Me Up I've Had Enough styled on the cover with quotation marks is the seventh studio album by the American band Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, released in 1987. It features the most songwriting collaborations between Petty and lead guitarist Mike Campbell out of any Petty album. It is also the first album not to feature then-former bassist Ron Blair on any tracks. Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers spent much of 1986 on the road as Bob Dylan's backing band. Dylan's presence proved to be a huge influence on the Heartbreakers, turning them away from the well-intentioned but slick pretensions of Southern Accents and toward a loose, charmingly ramshackle roots rock that harked back to their roots yet exhibited the professional eclecticism they developed during the mid-'80s. All of this was on full display on Let Me Up I've Had Enough, their simplest and best album since Hard Promises. Not to say that Let Me Up is a perfect album - far. In 1981, Blair, weary of the touring lifestyle, departed the band. His replacement, Howie Epstein, stayed with the band for the next two decades. In 1991, Scott Thurston joined the band as a multi-instrumentalist-mostly on rhythm guitar and second keyboards. Blair returned to the Heartbreakers in 2002, the year before Epstein's death. Petty and Campbells production of Let Me Up appropriately emphasizes immediacy over polish. Tossed-off slide-guitar segments, hand claps and sing-alongs are sandwiched between tracks in a couple of places, and several songs fade up at the start, as if they hadnt been properly cued. Through a bracing combination of will and raunch on Let Me Up Ive Had Enough, Petty and the Heartbreakers manage to turn the Eighties epidemics of loneliness and media-induced alienation into the fuel for an uplifting rock & roll party. And if thats no cure for the modern-day blues, its at least enlivening, heartfelt consolation. Popular on Rolling Stone. In This Article: Tom Petty
