Tracklisting anomalies:
The running order of this double album differs from the other available versions of this release (Single LP/Japanese CD/Complete Adventures box set). "Can You Still Love Me", "Love Of The World", "That Spiritual Feeling" & "Everybody's On The Run" all change positions.
There are also some mix differences:
A1 "A New Decade" The mix on this LP is missing the 'peace brother' vocal at the start. This track segues into "Can You Still Love Me" on other versions of the album but here you only get 4 or 5 seconds of the intro as the track fades out.
C1: "Can You Still Love Me" The version contained here is not the album version but the "Vocal" mix found on the B-Side of the "Promised Land" single (or track 5.2 on the Complete Adventures box set).
D1: "Everybody's On The Run" The version contained here is not the album version but "Version One" found on the B-Side of the "Long Hot Summer '89" single (or track 5.4 on the Complete Adventures box set).

Originally written in 1989. The record company refused to release the record as it was considered too dance orientated. It was eventually released in this format as a 2 x 12" Promo only to promote The Style Council's 1998 Boxset.

Album

Modernism: A New Decade is the fifth and final studio album by the band The Style Council. It represented a departure from the band's core genre of pop, to a new one deep house, which was then being referred to as garage as in Paradise Garage music by the UK press. However, upon its completion in 1989, it was rejected by their label Polydor, which led to the band breaking up. Track 6, That Spiritual Feeling, was re-recorded as a B-side to the first Paul Weller solo single, his 1991 hit Into. Songs in album The Style Council - Modernism- A New Decade 1998. The Style Council - A New Decade. The Style Council - Can You Still Love Me 189. The Style Council - The World Must Come Together. The Style Council - Hope Feelings Gonna Getcha. The Style Council - That Spiritual Feeling. The Style Council - Everybody's On The Run. The Style Council - Love Of The World. The Style Council - Sure Is Sure. So, the Style Council recorded Modernism: A New Decade, turned it in to their label, watched as Polydor refused to release it, and then disbanded. In the new millennium Polydor has seen fit to finally release the album and it's easy to understand the label's initial negative reaction the Style Council were famous for being musically eclectic, but they almost always retained a strong personal identity no matter what kind of musical genre they were exploring. Modernism: A New Decade is not a bad album, just a rather pointless one and it's dated much worse than most of the band's work from the 1980s. While Modernism: A New Decade was far short of an Earth-shattering development in house music, it was a brilliant example of the kind of beguiling EP the Council had initially utilized to differentiate itself with early four and five song twelve-inch vinyl such as Au Paris in Europe, as well as the US debut Introducing. Perhaps it was the fact that Mick Talbot could actually play all those keyboards. Maybe it was the oblivious approach to the programming not very hip at the time, but infinetely more listenable today than the records that WERE hip at the time. The Council had always shone brightest as a novelty act with just-that-someting-extra.
