Abrasive Lyrics. Album 2015 14 Songs. A departure from the dark minimalism of LP4, Magnifique reminds us of the Ratatat we fell in love with a decade ago: a playful mishmash of Brian May-syle guitar fireworks, searing synthesizers and tightly wound beats. Concise, 70s-inspired strutters like Cream on Chrome and Countach are, in fact, magnificent-and the duo brings a sense of adventure to exploratory five-minute-plus tracks like Nightclub Amnesia and Rome. Magnifique Ratatat. When Ratatat were at their peak, the duo crystallized an aesthetic that was similar to chillwave before chillwave existed. But, more often than not, their music has felt like a tasteful accessory, something that reminds you of other, more progressive electronic music, but mostly sounds great while trying on sweaters. Band Name Ratatat. Album Name Magnifique. Type Album. Released date 2015. Labels XL Recordings Because Music. Cream on Chrome. Stripping away much of the excess instrumentation and frills that adorned the previous two albums, Magnifique mostly sticks to the basics on the way to becoming the duo's most brightly immediate record yet, bouncing between sunny, hook-heavy uptempo tracks that have the kind of manic energy that could lead people to tear off their shirts and seriously lose it on the. dancefloor and relaxed, soft rock-inspired songs that serve as a nice soundtrack when one is coming down from those kinds of highs. Following up on the experimental sounds of LP3 and LP4, RATATAT return to their core guitar-driven sound on Magnifique. Combining the bedrock beats and primordial riffs from their first two albums with the sonic experimentation and production prowess of LP3 and LP4, Mike Stroud and Evan Mast arrived at a new plateau with Magnifique. RATATAT recently returned to the stage for the first time in four years to complete a handful of sold-out shows in Tulsa, Denver, Salt Lake City and Las Vegas
