The last two conductors to give us Big Orchestra Mozart were Bernstein and Karajan, and both have been gone for over 20 years hard to believe. In the mono era, Beecham, Walter, Toscanini and Furtwangler had no qualms about playing Haydn or Mozart with a full complement of strings. Klemperer's first Philharmonia recordings of each date from 1956 and were released on mono LPs, but EMI has found the early stereo master tapes Symphony 38 CD 7 is issued here for the first time in stereo. It was founded in 1945 by Walter Legge, a classical music record producer for EMI. Among the conductors who worked with the orchestra in its early years were Richard Strauss, Wilhelm Furtwängler and Arturo Toscanini of the Philharmonia's younger conductors, the most important to its development was Herbert von Karajan, who though never formally chief conductor was closely associated with the orchestra in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Needing to find a new conductor for the orchestra, Legge turned to Otto Klemperer, whose career was flagging at the time. This proved to be an inspired decision, and Klemperer's name became indelibly linked with the orchestra during an Indian Summer of great recordings. In 1959, Klemperer was named music director for life. On 10 March 1964, Legge announced that he was going to disband the Philharmonia Orchestra
