It is Mastodon's first concept album, loosely based on the 1851 novel Moby-Dick by Herman Melville. The songs Iron Tusk, Blood and Thunder, I Am Ahab and Seabeast were released as singles. Also Leviathan had the advantage of not having to weld their cracking tunes to an unwieldy concept unlike Rog and the boys. Leviathan The Legendary Lost Elektra Album may well have disappeared without making much of a ripple even if it had seen the light of day back in 1969, knowing the bands luck, but that is not to blind us from its many good qualities. Though Leviathan were never destined to make the higher reaches of the charts and struggled to even get their records released, they had an innate skill for producing excellent Psychedelic-toned Pop Music and finally, all these years lat. Yet their lone album was held back from release at the last minute by Elektra president Jac Holzman, who supposedly wasnt happy with some of the songs and wanted them to go back into the studio to record more. At that critical point, with their finances in dire straits and their morale destroyed by this action after years of trying to make it, Leviathan broke up. But Leviathan: The Legendary Lost Elektra Album is highly recommended equally to collectors of the genre and to those for whom Leviathan slipped quietly by almost 50 years longer Lost, but deservedly Legendary. Read more. 21 people found this helpful. Great album from one of the 'lost' groups of that era. It's amazing they didn't make it. Leviathan recorded this, their debut album, but sadly had it pulled from releases at the last possible moment, cancelled & ensuring the last nail in the coffin for the band. The musicianship on this album is beyond belief. Roger McCabes bass lines are not only pumping, but would certainly be rated along side Roger Waters & Noel Redding from the same era. Just stunning. Stuart Hobdays vocals are quite wonderful. Totally suited to the sound of Leviathan. Gary Roscoe Murphy on drums is so laid back & fully in a world of his own. Holding down the timing as Rogers bass circles around
