Bach: The Goldberg Variations is the 1955 debut album of Canadian classical pianist Glenn Gould. An interpretation of Johann Sebastian Bach's Goldberg Variations BWV 988, the work launched Gould's career as a renowned international pianist, and became one of the most well-known piano recordings. Sales were astonishing for a classical album: it was reported to have sold 40,000 copies by 1960, and had sold more than 100,000 by the time of Gould's death in 1982. In 1981, a year before his death. Glenn Gould plays Bach - The Goldberg Variations, BMV 998 Zenph re-performance. While Glenn Gould's 1955 debut recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations has attained legendary status, there are many devoted fans who rank the 1981 recording just as highly, even though it offers a dramatically different interpretation. This album was made shortly before the pianist's premature death at age 50, so it is significant for being his last recording indeed, the opening measures of the Aria are carved on Gould's headstone, in final recognition of the work's importance to him, so these two recordings may be regarded as bookends to the pianist's extraordi. Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 1955 Recording: Variation 2 a 1 Clav. By Johann Sebastian Bach. Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 1955 Recording: Variation 3 a 1 Clav. Canone all' Unisuono. His 1981 recording of the Goldberg Variations is still recognizable as Gould: the strutting precision and emphasis on counterpoint apparent. So too is Goulds famously divisive practice of humming along with his playing a natural trait of Goulds that seemed to flower into a deliberate affectation sometime between 1955 and 1981. But in the 1981 variations, Gould makes good on his desire for dignity. The 1955 rendition of No. 5 has a compelling, nervy energy the 1981 version takes a greater sense of self-possession
